Hunting Strategy… "to avoid the negative side effects of hunting pressure" "Hunting Pressure is a phenomenon rising out of the direct contact of humans engaged in the pursuit of wild populations of animals in a hunting scenario. It tends to cumulatively reduce either the number or the visibility of the pursued species with repeated contact on successive dates." In light of this phenomenon, deer hunting activity by guests of the Cedar Knoll® Hunting Lodge is strictly regulated below "impact levels" throughout the hunting season. This fosters a level of comfort that allows all animals to go about their normal routine without altering daily feeding, foraging or breeding behavior in response to hunting pressure. At the Cedar Knoll® Hunting Lodge, Hayward & Dona strictly limit deer hunting activity to not more than ten deer hunters on Lakeview Plantation with appropriate "rest periods" scheduled between hunts to allow the animals to return to their normal routine. In addition to providing a quality outdoor experience, which does not require a limit on the individual hunter's harvest, this approach also meets the owner's most important long-term management objective of maintaining the integrity of the habitat.

Most stands will accommodate 2 people affording the hunter the opportunity to be accompanied by his spouse or novice child. Hunters are allowed to harvest a maximun of one buck per sitting of their choice, but are encouraged to shoot only adult bucks after they have taken one buck. Antlerless tags will be made available at the owners discretion in to control herd size and achieve management objectives.
HOG HUNTING Wild boar hunting is available at the Cedar Knoll Hunting Lodge on a year-round basis and provides the most avid hunter with a challenging experience that will be remembered well after the hunt . According to a recent article, wild boar in the Savannah River Drainage (where Cedar Knoll is located) date back to the mid-1500’s. They are truly wild and are not feral farm hogs that have been released into the area for hunting purposes. On the other hand, there is some evidence that there has been some cross breeding with wild Russian boar that were released on a neighboring 22,800 acre plantation for hunting purposes in 1984 which adds to the ferocity as well as the size of the colonial feral hogs. Hayward and Dona Simmons, owners of the Cedar Knoll Hunting Lodge limit wild boar hunting activity to provide rest periods between hunts. These rest periods help to maintain high visibility and success rates that exceed 100%. Specifically, hunters have enjoyed success rates in excess of 200% in 2009 on two-day and three-day hog hunts largely as a result of the ten-day rest period that is scheduled between hunts. Hunters are allowed to harvest 1 hog per sitting (2 per day), but encouraged only to shoot those animals that are intended for processing and/or trophies destined for the taxidermist. The rates for a hog only hunt are $395.00 per day with a two-day minimum. The rate on combination quail/hog hunt is the same as the applicable rate on a quail hunt with the hog hunt substituted for the afternoon quail hunt. The rate on the combination deer/hog hunt is the same as the applicable rate on the deer only hunt plus $150.00 with the harvest of a hog replacing the harvest of a deer during either the morning or afternoon sitting during a deer hunt.
QUAIL HUNTING Quail hunting out of the CEDAR KNOLL HUNTING LODGE offers an ambiance reminiscent of quail hunting in a bygone era...gentlemanly atmosphere, obedient dogs and service befitting the quail hunter and dedicated admirer of the king of game birds. It is an experience to remember, including the peaceful ride afield through the groomed plantation grounds, the intensity of the dogs, the explosion of the quail as they seek cover and the pleasant, accommodating Cedar Knoll staff. This experience appeals to both the hunter and his/her non-hunting companion. Join us for the day or stay over night and enjoy one of the most peaceful places on earth. Quail hunts include field transportation, guides, dogs, appropriate meals/beverages and overnight stay as suggested under "Rates."
COMBO HUNT DEER/HOG or QUAIL/HOG Wild boar hog hunting is permitted on a year-round basis, as suggested above and may be enjoyed on a hog only hunt or a combination quail/hog hunt in order to provide a more diverse hunting experience during a visit to the Cedar Knoll Hunting Lodge. The rates for a hog only hunt are $400.00 per day with a two-day minimum and the opportunity to harvest 1 hog per sitting (two per day). The rate on the combination deer/hog hunt is the same as the applicable rate on the deer only hunt plus $150.00 with the opportunity to harvest a hog in place of the harvest of a buck deer during either the morning or afternoon sitting on a deer hunt. The rate on combination quail/-hog hunt is the same as the applicable rate on a quail hunt with the hog hunt substituted for the afternoon quail hunt. Enjoy the opportunity to harvest either a deer or a hog on a combination deer/hog hunt or an exciting morning wing shooting followed by an afternoon of hog hunting in the Savannah River Drainage.Hunters are allowed to harvest a maximum of 1 hog persitting. |
